Situated on the banks of River Jhelum, Srinagar is the capital and the largest city of Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar is known for its natural environment, gardens, waterfronts and houseboats. It is also known for its traditional Kashmiri handicrafts, particularly Kashmir shawl (made of pashmina and cashmere wool). It is also known as a major supplier of dried fruits in India.

Srinagar can be reached by road and air. Its airport is well connected to major Indian cities of India. By road, one can reach Srinagar through Jammu.
Srinagar will soon be connected by rail also. Indian Railway is working speedily on to connect Jammu region with Kashmir region.
Tourists can experience the life in houseboat by staying in one of those in one of the several lakes situated in the heart of Srinagar. Tourists can visit Floating Market, buy some Kashmir handicrafts and enjoy delicious authentic Kashmiri meals prepared by the houseboat owners. Visit Shankaracharya, the temple on top of a hill where the famous sage Shanakaracharya is supposed to have done mediation. Explore traditional local markets as well.
Tourists should explore the famous Mughal gardens - Shalimar Garden, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal. These are a group of gardens laid out during the reign of the Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shahjahan in different parts of Srinagar. These were made in typical Persian style – rectilinear layouts within walled enclosures with features like pools, fountains and canals inside the gardens.
Tulip Gardens, supposed to be the largest garden of Tulip flowers in Asia, spread over 12 hectares, has been a place of attraction for tourists for long.
