Lachen is a town in North Sikkim. Located at an elevation of 2,750 meters, Lachen has become quite popular among tourists. It is known for its lush vegetation that contains mainly grasslands and shrubs along with apple orchards. It serves as the base to visit the ever-beautiful Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. Lachen, which means 'big pass' also organizes an annual yak race, called the Thangu, in summer.
Lachen is around 110km from Gangtok and can be reached in 5-6 hours. Special permission is required to visit Lachen which can be obtained from Gangtok.
The whole area is mesmerizing. There are, however, a number of specific places one can visit in Lachen. These include Lachen Monastery, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, the sacred Gurudongmar Lake, the nature's gift Chopta Valley, Thangu Valley, Tso Lhamo Lake, Muguthang Valley, and Green Lake.
