Madikeri, the headquarter of Kodagu district, also called Coorg, is situated in Karnataka. This is a major coffee growing region of India. Coorg, which stands at 1452 meters above sea level, has several cascading waterfalls, misty mountains, spice plantations, some tea gardens and tropical forests. All these make Coorg a must visit place for tourists.

Coorg can be reached by road in around six hours from Bangalore. It is situated around 130km from Mysore and can be reached in around three hours. Bangalore is well connected to most major cities by air, train and road.
Coorg, which is often referred to as ‘Scotland of India’, has a number of must visit places. Of the several waterfalls, Abbey Waterfall is perhaps the best. The waterfall, whose natural beauty is splendid, has water cascading over rocks in the midst of greenery all around.
Dubare Elephant Camp, a project run by the Forest Department, is another nice place situated on the banks of River Kaveri. One can get an opportunity to see elephants from close. Tourists can indulge in river rafting here as well.
Close to Dubare Elephant Camp is Tibetan Monastery. There are some nice temples in Madikeri and areas around it. Some of those are Omkareswar Temple, Padi Igguthappa Temple and Talakaveri Temple.
Madikeri Fort is an important landmark which tourists should see. This fort, which was built initially in the 17th century fort by Mudduraja, was taken over by Tipu Sultan who rennovated the palace inside the Fort. Later on, the Fort changed many hands at different times before falling to the British eventually.
Madikeri offers some wonderful trekking opportunities to nature lovers. A visit to coffee plantation and spice plantation should also be taken here.
