Places to visit

Agra is obviously famous for being the home of the Taj. So, for any tourist in Agra, Taj Mahal has to be the first place to visit. The second most prominent monument in Agra is Agra Fort. Having served as the seat of power during Lodi and then Mughal Period, Agra Fort has a lot of prominent places to visit. Jahangiri Mahal, Angoori Bagh, Diwani-i-Am and Dian-i-khas along with the place where Shahjahan was imprisoned by Aurangzeb are some major highlights of a tour to Agra Fort. Mughal architecture in Agra is, however, not limited to just these two. A visit to the tombs of Itimad-ud-Daula and Akbar's Tomb is also an experience in understanding Mughal architectural style from close.

One can also visit Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden), a square garden complex measuring 300 meters on each side of Taj Mahal across River Yamuna. It is the only park which has remained out of almost a dozen Mughal-built gardens in the area. Even this Park was in dire straits but Archeological Survey of India has started revamping it. A heritage walk in the older parts of present day Agra gives a better insight into how life might have been in Agra in the past. Just an hour's drive from Agra is Fatehpur Sikri, the first capital of Akbar.

A visit to see workers working intricately on marble stones should also be done in Agra. Agra has emerged as an important leather and footwear manufacturing center. Tourists can visit these and buy some leather goods or shoes here.
